Around The Classroom

Many of you have emailed me and asked me more about homeschooling and I have been so honored to answer your questions. One of the questions that many of you have wondered about is "Do you have a special place in your home where you do school?" The answer is easy, "yes" and "no".  Yes, I have finally found the perfect use for our small and awkward loft, which has been a thorn in my side since we purchased this house. It's been Ole's office (that was a disaster) my studio (too small) a playroom for the kids (too loud) and now finally a place to house all of our school supplies and also do work if we choose. No, because we "do school" all over the place. Snuggled up in the family room reading stories, in the kitchen for the messy projects, and outside for nature studies, field trips and really messy projects.  The kids also each have desks and computers in each of their rooms for independent and quiet work, although, that usually doesn't last too long as they all much prefer to be a part of the action. However, this space is working out perfectly now. I have everything organized from curriculum, to art supplies, music & videos, to games and puzzles and of course our collection of books. The biggest problem with this space is I have no wall space to hang up any artwork or maps. So, I have to be creative and come up with other solutions. One of the big drawbacks of a loft space is lack of walls. The kids and I love spending time in our cozy little loft and I am amazed how much stuff we have managed to get into this small space. Now, I just need to give this space some personality. Currently, I have some colorful Chinese paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling to add a pop of color but, it's just temporary until I come up with a better plan. The only place I can really add any type of color and fun is to the ceiling and that's a tough one. I have been poking around on Pinterest looking for ideas but to be honest there isn't very much out there for ceiling decor :  ) I want to add more visual excitement to the room and make it even more inviting. So, I will be working on coming up with some clever ideas to add some wow factor to our little learning loft. I will keep you posted if I come up with any genius ideas! Thanks for stopping by and visiting.

Every homeschooling-mom's dream! Looks amazing and I love the chinese lanterns. I wouldn't change them. Thanks for sharing. Who knows if it won't inspire some mom's to homeschool, which would be awesome!

My previous post contained a grammatical error which I would like to pretend was a test, thus still qualifying me as a teacher of my own homeschooler, but alas, I just did it incorrectly. Oh well, homeschooling is still a great experience! :)

Have you tried running some wire across the ceiling and hanging your kids artwork from it? Also you could put the map on the tabletop and cover it with heavy plastic.

So beautiful and so organized! I wish I had your skills when I look at my rooms I see clutter and as hard as I try to organize, the more I see its not a gift I have. You have an awesome gift!

I am so jealous. I really REALLY with I had a room to pretend it is my schoolroom. We mostly homeschool in the living room ;) But this is lovely (and I recognise a few books there even!)

I just realised you have the math gnomes too! Ours are scattered, but appear every so often. Usually as entertainment LOL

Oh my gosh, I was here looking at sewing stuff and can't believe you have all of the Froebel gifts! Where ever did you get them? I've been trying to figure out where to purchase them.

Looks great! I hs'd my three boys k-12 and we had a classroom out in our carriage house. I loved having a dedicated space and it worked very well for us. Now that my boys are all out of college and one is married, I think I really miss those days... enjoy them!!!!!
