Changes...


Sorry, I've been MIA the past few days but it's been a little rough around here. After doing tons of research I came to the conclusion that I may have certain food allergies. I've never spoken about it here before, but I have had "tummy issues"for years and lately some other symptoms have started showing up too. So, I started doing a lot of reading and indeed...I have a lot of the classic symptoms. So, for the past few days I have been both gluten and dairy free, and let me tell you ...IT IS NOT EASY!!!! In fact it really stinks. I AM SOOOOO HUNGRY!!! but all the things that I want... are not things I can have. I am so used to waking up every morning and having a piece of toast with butter and of course that's out, as is yogurt, muffins, most cereals, etc etc. All those delicious carbs are missing from my normal routine and I am seriously going through withdrawal. Who would have thought that eliminating such everyday things like bread could be so difficult! I feel weak and sluggish and I have a pounding headache and basically feel like crap! Going without dairy isn't that hard for me but the going without wheat is really hard.

Yes, yes ...I know there are lots of new gluten-free products out on the market and I am anxious to give some of them a try. Thankfully, I have a dear friend who is already gluten/dairy free so she has done a lot of the leg work already and knows what is yummy and what isn't, so we may be heading up to Richmond today to Whole Foods and Ellwood Thompson's to go shopping. Sadly, we don't have any good grocery shops here in town that carry a large selection of G-free/D-free products so I have to schlepp up to Richmond to do that. Needless to say not too much else has been going on around here because I haven't had very much energy. Please!!! if you are G-free or D-free and can recommend yummy alternatives for me I would greatly appreciate any ideas.

I just found all your patterns on a website and googled you to find out if you have a site. I was shocked to find a gluten post! :) I'm sorry to hear you have had to go gluten free and dairy free but I truly hope it helps. Me and my two daughters have been gluten and dairy free for 1 and a half years now. Do you live in Richmond, VA? If so let me know or email me at JLynn1347@gmail.com because there are several places in that area that have some really delicious stuff and there is even a gluten free restaurant in Bethesda that also caters to other allergies. But I'd love to give you some ideas. For milk I suggest coconut milk sold at Whole Foods and Wegmans. They also have delicious yogurt products.

I am sorry you are suffering with tummy issues and that the transition to a different diet is so hard. I can not imagine having to give up a mainstream diet. I am sure it is so hard to deal with just for you, not to mention trying to cook for the whole family, too.

Have you looked at the Elana's Pantry website? Tons of great recipes, even for baked goods which really fill the void. Hang in there - it does get better! The first few days are the hardest IMHO.

Oh Dawn, we are not dealing with exactly the same thing, but a week ago we went off all sugars and wheat. I think the wheat may be a temporary thing but I think sugar is gone for good, and you know how crazy I am about chocolate. I have been in a great deal of pain all week from the detox. But I am hoping that this will be worth it and I will start to feel better soon. I do not know any good gluten free recipes though. I am sorry. I hope you feel better soon too.

Thanks you so much for all of your well wishes and suggestions. I did go shopping and I found a bunch of things that are gluten free/dairy free that i am anxious to try. Fingers crossed that a lot of the goodies that I got are yummy!

When our bodies rebel against us, it is the pits! It must be terribly difficult to give up so many of your favorite things. I do notice many things now are gluten free. Keeping you in my thoughts for better health, but still yummy and enjoyable food and treats!

I think we've talked about it before but my little sweetie is gluten-free and dairy free also. She eats this bread we get at whole foods and the brand is Udi. There is a white bread version and a whole wheat version. It is the best gluten free bread we have found. Also if you eat ice cream a good alternative is Coconut Bliss. You can go to their website and find out where to get it in your area. Jacy loves the vanilla the best of the flavors we have tried. We have done a ton of research so don't hesitate to call me if you have questions. I hope you are feeling better soon! :) Kelly

Dawn ... I thought about you the minute I saw this recipe for these gluten-free chocolate cookies. They look as if they would be sort of brownie-isy and gooey in texture ... I'm going to give them a try very soon, and maybe use cashews instead of pecans since I have those on hand.
