Yay!!!! We Are Joining Our Local CSA!!!!
I cannot tell you how excited I am to be doing this. A friend of mine here in W'burg told me about it and I was in love with the idea instantly! What a wonderful thing to have delicious fresh produce that is all 100% organic and grown locally by independent farmers. I can't wait to start! We will be picking up starting this Thursday and I cannot wait to see what delicious goodies will be in our baskets. The people who run the CSA have a farm with all kinds of animals so the kids will just love it. They also have fresh eggs and honey and plan to add organic dairy products to their line-up! Wow!!! My grocery shopping will change dramatically if this works out well. I can't tell you how much happier I would be to give our money to support local growers rather than big companies. Next thing you know I will be grinding my own wheat...which is something I am actually interested in trying. I love the idea of really getting back to basics and making as much as I can from scratch. I do a lot now but the more the better. I will keep you posted about our CSA experience and all the wonderful local goodies that we will have in our fridge.
I think this may be the summer where I learn a lot about canning. Another thing I have always wanted to try. I am so excited. I can see it now shelves and shelves of homemade tomato sauce, pickles, jams, etc.etc. I'd better get reading up on it. I have a lot to learn!

Please do keep us posted! I've already looked into joining a local CSA in Hawaii as well! What a great way to support local businesses as well as keep a fridge stocked with healthy goodies! :)
CSA? What's that?
Yeah, I wanna know too. How do I find out about joining one?
A CSA is Community Supported Agriculture. It's kinda like a co-op but we don't do the work. I just had to pay the fee up front and from now until the end of Oct. we go every week and get 2 big bushel baskets of fresh produce and other goodies. Every week it will be a variety of what is being harvested now. My friend got lettuce, tomatoes, corn onions, squash, beans, zucchini, potatoes, strawberries, and a few other things I am sure I am forgetting. Plus farm fresh eggs and honey. It's really a wonderful thing...all organic and fresh...yum! I am sure I will have tons of yummy recipes coming from all these fruits and veggies coming our way! You should see if you have them in your area!!!
How exciting! We have a local CSA, but I haven't gotten up the courage to join yet. I'd love to hear about your canning adventures - that's a skill I would love to learn some day also!
Sounds like a wonderful idea!
I always.. always try to buy from our local farmers...I love fresh fruits and veggies - oh and eggs! YUMMY!!!
I've just learned to can this summer, as well. It's a lot easier than I realized! I have big plans for canning so much more this summer.
