Sewing On Paper

This week my friend Tiffeni came over to do a project with my kids. She is in the beginning stages of writing an updated version of Friedrich Froebel's "Mother Songs". Now for those of you who are not familiar with Froebel he was a German educator and the Father of Kindergarten. He wrote his book "Mother Songs" back in the late 1800's and although the text is somewhat out of date, the ideas are timeless. Tiffeni, who is a Froebel pedagogue has taken on the huge task of updating this amazing collection of activities and has asked me and my kids to help. Over the next few months we will be her "lab rats", so to speak, so she can test out all kinds of songs and activities to include in her book. It's all very exciting!

Today we started with Froebel's occupation 11 and 12. Paper punching and sewing. It very similar to what we now know of with kids sewing cards. Except the designs were much simpler and the kids got to punch the holes themselves. Elliott, Abby and Henry were all mezmerized as she showed them how to do this step by step. I was the designated photographer, so I had a great time snapping tons of pictures for Tiffeni to choose from for her blog and her book. The kids loved every minute of it and can't wait for her to come back for more fun.
